A corrections officer who worked part time at the Bradford County (Fla.) Jail is facing a federal civil-rights violation charge. Terry Jenkins, 32, has been charged by the FBI with striking an inmate at the Starke jail. He is free on $25,000 bond. The charge comes from an investigation of allegations that employees have violated the civil rights of inmates. Former prisoners and their families complained to the FBI last October. Jenkins is accused of hitting an inmate in the face and kicking him in the torso in an isolation cell last month. Jailed for extradition, the inmate had a large black eye afterward. Jenkins has been suspended without pay from the jail and faces dismissal. The state says no decision has been made on his job status at Union Correctional Institution. |
