An inmate convicted of first-degree murder in Cumberland County 13 years ago has been charged in the Wednesday murder of a corrections officer in Bertie County, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety. On Thursday, the Windsor Police Department charged Craig Wissink with killing 29-year-old correctional Sgt. Meggan Lee Callahan. She died about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday following the incident at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor. Callahan was assaulted about 5:30 p.m. while responding to a trash can fire in a dormitory of Bertie Correctional, a news release said. Callahan had gotten a fire extinguisher and was attempting to put out the fire when Wissink attacked her. A struggle ensued. Read More. |
