| 11-year-old attacks detention center officer |

A detention officer at the Polk Youth Correctional Facility in N.C. was recovering last Friday from injuries suffered after being assaulted by an 11-year-old inmate, authorities said. The youth was brought into the sergeant's office for questioning about a theft and a scuffle at the juvenile detention center, and the youth grabbed a set of handcuffs off the desk and began beating the officer with them, authorities said. After the sergeant fell to the ground, the youth grabbed his baton and continued the attack, authorities said. After other officers came to restrain the youth, the sergeant was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for facial bruises and a cut above his eye, authorities said. |
