Two Johnson County (Kan.) Department of Corrections buildings under construction caught fire last week and flames could be seen covering half of the roof of one of the buildings, said Joe Waters, the county's director of facilities. No one was in the building at the time the fire started and a cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. High winds at the site at the New Century AirCenter near Gardner helped fuel the blaze. The $12 million project, designed to increase space for programs in one building, and add another 232 beds in another, was 90 percent complete, Waters said. The buildings were scheduled to be occupied in August, Waters said. Building Construction Enterprises of Kansas City is the project contractor. The county has yet to take ownership of the new buildings. |
