Two inmates were stabbed and seriously wounded in a fight at one of the temporary detention facilities set up after unrest and fires severely damaged Barbados' lone prison last week, officials said Wednesday. The men were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after the fight late Tuesday, the government said. No further details were provided including what type of weapon was used or how it got into the temporary facility. The incident underscored security difficulties at three temporary sites being used to house nearly 1,000 prisoners. The government has not disclosed the locations of two of the sites but said the 67 female prisoners were being held at army headquarters. Officials searched the inmates before moving them late last week. At least 30 lighters were found while a penknife was discovered hidden in an inmate's rectum, authorities said. Two days of fires and unrest last week at the overcrowded Glendairy Prison outside the Caribbean island's capital killed one inmate and injured at least 25 others including six guards. Nine prisoners remain hospitalised from last week's unrest - some with gunshot wounds from prison guards. On Monday, Parliament passed emergency legislation to amend the former British colony's Prisons Act, allowing police and soldiers to help guard the inmates at the temporary locations. The legislation also permitted police, soldiers and corrections officers to carry firearms within prison walls. A contingent of 120 troops from other Caribbean nations is in Barbados to reinforce security. Opposition Democratic Labour Party legislators on Monday called for an independent inquiry into the March 29-30 unrest at the 150-year-old Glendairy Prison. Prime Minister Owen Arthur said an investigation would come eventually but emphasized that the government's first priority is to guarantee the security on the island of 277,000. |
