| Scott's jail costs drop as state removes its inmates |

GATE CITY — Rising costs for the Duffield Regional Jail have rankled members of the Scott County Board of Supervisors since February, but the county has reduced costs and hopes to cut them even more. Scott County Administrator Freda Starnes told the board during its regular monthly meeting Wednesday that the Virginia Department of Corrections had taken all but three of the state prisoners being held at the facility. As a result, the county is projected to save close to $300,000 during the next fiscal year. “All of our vocalization on the needs of the state to take responsibility for their inmates has not gone unnoticed,” Chairman David Redwine told the board. “We appreciate Sen.
