MANCHESTER, N.H. — New Hampshire has a chronic, severe and expensive shortage of corrections officers, and it's a problem that might not be resolved soon, officials said. Corrections officials said the state is on track to exceed $10 million in overtime for corrections officers this year, nearly triple the overtime budget. At the Valley Street Jail in Manchester, 16-hour shifts are routine, and the environment can be loud and violent, officials said. Superintendent Dave Dionne said there are 30 corrections officer vacancies at the jail, and the ongoing drug crisis has made the tough job even tougher. Read More. |
