An Angola corrections officer has confessed to assisting in the attempted escape of two Angola inmates, officials said last Tuesday. Sheriff's officials said Franklin Shaffer, 25, of St. Francisville, admitted to using his key to leave the prison's exit door open and then opening the cell doors of inmates David Wammack and Roy McLaughlin last Monday. The two inmates, both serving life sentences for murder, attempted to escape by jumping the fence after leaving their cell blocks. An alert tower officer saw the men and opened fire, although no shots hit the two prisoners. Wammack and McLaughlin were taken into custody without ever getting over the fence. Shaffer has been arrested and booked with a felony count of assisting escape. |
