The Oklahoma Department of Corrections is celebrating its 50th year. As an agency charged with housing and rehabilitating the state's prison inmates, the department was officially created in 1967. Lawmakers in both the House and Senate recognized the department and its employees Monday, including the 20 corrections employees who have died in the line of duty. The employees who have won best-of-the-year awards stood in the Capitol chambers for special recognition. "Much has changed in our society over the course of 50 years," said Corrections Director Joe Allbaugh. "But one thing remains constant, and that is the hard work of our employees who put their lives on the line every day protecting the citizens of Oklahoma. On behalf of the DOC, I also want to recognize the 20 individuals who lost their lives over the past 50 years in the line of duty. Their ultimate sacrifice helped make our state a safer place."
