Colorado's largest private prison operator planned to move 131 Washington state inmates out of its Colorado prisons Wednesday, as it makes changes in the aftermath of a riot in its Olney Springs prison last July. The Washington inmates will be moved to Minnesota, said John D. Ferguson, president and CEO of Corrections Corporation of America, which operates the 1,200-bed prison and three other private prisons in Colorado. Friction among inmates from Washington who arrived at the prison in July were seen as a factor in the riot. The prison also housed Colorado and Wyoming inmates under contracts with each state. CCA officials said they had increased staff pay after the riot to stabilize its rapid turnover and were working more closely with Colorado state prison officials to correct operational deficiencies cited by the state. |
