Five days after Tywon M. Salters was hospitalized for eating plastic off a sandal from his jail uniform, the 21-year-old inmate stole a handgun from a corrections officer assigned to guard him, according to information released Monday following the weekend Delnor Hospital hostage standoff that ended with a SWAT officer shooting the Chicago man in the head. Salters' preliminary cause of death is a single gunshot wound to the head, which caused intercranial injuries, said Kane County Coroner Rob Russell, whose office performed the autopsy Monday. At this point, only two people could know how Salters, of the 100 block of West 103rd Place, got the officer's 9mm handgun inside his third-floor room at the Geneva hospital, said Kane County Lt. Patrick Gengler, the spokesman for the sheriff's office. One was Salters. The other is the officer, who had not been interviewed by investigators as of Monday afternoon, Gengler said. Read More. |
