Department of Corrections struggling to hire and retain officers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Department of Corrections added two names to a memorial honoring fallen correctional officers Wednesday. The department’s ability to hire and retain officers may impact how many more names are added to the memorial in the future.

Every time a correctional officer walks through secure gates and into work, they are risking their lives. Plus, they go in unarmed.

Two officers died on duty in 2016. Neither of their deaths were caused by an inmate, but some say it was the stress of the job.

“Having a heart attack is no different than being taken out by an inmate, in my estimation,” says Corrections Secretary Julie Jones.
