An inmate tried to escape from the Oahu Community Correctional Center in Kalihi, Hawaii, early Tuesday morning but was badly hurt in the attempt, officials said. Police searched for Greg Schoenlein, 43, after he tried to escape at about 3:30 a.m. He was scheduled for kitchen duty, but could not be found. Schoenlein snuck away while unloading food in the Makai end of the prison. "He shimmied up the fence and used a metal spatula to pull down the Constantine wire and he climbed over that. It cut up his arm and his leg real bad," Department of Public Safety spokesman Mike Gaede said. Prison officers found a pool of blood near a razor-wire fence. Teams concentrated their efforts in that area. Shortly before 6 a.m., authorities found Schoenlein hiding on the prison grounds. "He was immediately taken to Queen's (Medical Center) because his laceration were pretty severe and he was bleeding pretty heavily," Gaede said. Schoenlein was indicted for second-degree theft last November. His trial was set to start on April 25. |
