A state investigation into a prison gang has wrapped up, and the gangsters - correctional officers - are now facing discipline for victimizing their coworkers. The gang at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants referred to itself as the A Team and demanded that other officers follow its rules. If an officer didn't, retaliation would occur, ranging from slashed tires and keyed cars on up. "The female officer was locked up in the pod, started having seizures and she was banging on the door and the inmates also helped bang," recalled Eugene Archunde, himself a onetime victim of the A Team. "And the officer who was part of the A Team disliked her so much that he wouldn't respond to her." Five officers have been placed on leave following an investigation by a private company, according to Tia Bland, the spokesperson for the state corrections department. "We had one person who voluntarily retired, we had another who, on Monday, received a termination notice, and disciplinary action is pending for three individuals," said Bland. One of those for whom discipline is pending is the brother in law of state corrections secretary Joe Williams. It's unknown what possible sanctions he and the other two may face. |
