An often-paroled convicted rapist is being sought after cutting his electronic ankle bracelet and disappearing before authorities could get to his apartment.
Leonard A. Valdez, 33, of Clearfield, Utah, is wanted by Farmington's Adult Probation and Parole.
Valdez is believed to be traveling with his girlfriend, Patricia Sida, 24. They dropped off their four children with family members, said Karl Kennington, Farmington's AP&P supervisor.
Investigators say that on Saturday, Valdez stripped back the plastic band off the monitoring device, held the wires together with clips and cut them.
A signal let authorities know the monitor had been tampered with and officers were at his apartment within minutes, but he already had gone.
Parole agents said Tuesday that no warrant was issued for Sida. Agents said she was on felony probation from 2001 to 2003 for possession of a controlled substance, theft and failure to respond to an officer.
Valdez was convicted of rape in 1991. He and a friend picked up a woman and raped her, said Kimberly Holden, parole agent.
Valdez was sentenced to five years to life in prison and was released to a halfway house in Ogden in January 2002. He disappeared, was picked up a few days later and was sent back to prison. He was released again in October 2002, disappeared again and sent back to prison February 2003.
In July 2003, he was released and made it through the halfway house program.
In December 2004 Valdez was placed on electronic monitoring system because he had violated his parole by using illegal drugs, Holden said.
Valdez has a history of drug use and his criminal record dates back to when he was first arrested at age 11.
The fugitive is suspected of being associated with the Ogden Trece gang.
