New Brunswick prison officers fired several rounds of tear gas in an attempt to break up a small riot in the exercise yard of the Atlantic Institution in Renous, N.B. Saturday night. Prison spokesman Brian Richard said at least three separate fights broke out around 6:45 p.m. after a group of 28 inmates refused to return to their cells. "One individual got into a fight with one other person, then that individual got into a fight with another person and again with a couple of other inmates," said Richard. Richard said prison officials weren't sure why the inmates refused to return to their cells or why the fights broke out. He said the melee stopped shortly after a guard issued a verbal warning and then fired two warning shots from a prison control tower. But he said inmates still refused to leave the yard and the situation soon deteriorated into more violence. Richard said officer fired 18 tear gas rounds in an attempt to gain control over the course of the nearly five-hour long disturbance. At one point, RCMP officers, the local fire department and ambulance services were also called in and placed on standby. Richard said calm was restored shortly before midnight. "The warden went out and read the Riot Act to the inmates . . . shortly after that they agreed to come back into the institution two at a time." Engineering and maintenance crews were assessing damage to the yard and exterior of the building Sunday. Richard said no serious injuries or damage resulted from the unrest. The prisoners involved were all from the same unit of the prison. Richard said the unit, which houses 68 of the prison's 207 inmates, was placed under a restrictive lock down that was expected to last into Monday. |
