WILKES-BARRE — The Luzerne County coroner said an inmate hanged herself June 8 inside the jail, according to the Times Tribune.

Brooke Griesing, 23, was found unresponsive in her cell shortly after 9 p.m. June 8, authorities said. She was rushed to a hospital in Wilkes-Barre where she was pronounced dead about 9:46 p.m. Griesing's death is under investigation.

In 2012, 300 inmates committed suicide in local prisons nationwide and in 2013, that number rose to 327, or 34 percent of all local prison inmate deaths. And since 2000, 3,786 men and 347 women have committed suicide in local prisons.
