| Jail ceases incoming personal mail for inmates |

DOVER — Sending a letter to an inmate at the Strafford County jail? Send it by email or it won’t arrive. Following an incident of multiple overdoses at the Strafford County House of Corrections last week, the jail has ceased delivery of personal, non-legal mail to inmates. The new rule began on Monday, said the jail’s Acting Superintendent Capt. Chris Brackett and Strafford County Administrator Ray Bower. All mail received by the facility will be returned unopened in another envelope with instructions on how to send the message electronically. The county had planned to stop incoming personal mail later this summer but rolled out sooner because of the overdose incident that sent three to the hospital, Bower said. However, Bower and Brackett would not say whether mail was the avenue the suspected illicit drugs entered the facility and referred those questions to the Strafford County Sheriff’s Department, which is handling the investigation.
