Corrections official apologizes for ‘elopement’ problems in Myles Standish State Forest

PLYMOUTH – We didn’t anticipate, we didn’t communicate, we’re going to do better. That was the message that Massachusetts Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner Michael Grant brought to Myles Standish State Forest last Wednesday night in an attempt to diffuse the fear and anger that followed a series of “elopements” from a DOC treatment facility in the forest.

Elopement is the term used by the DOC when addicts at treatment facilities walk away from those facilities, something that has happened several times in the first month of the facility’s operation.

Speaking in the barn near the forest’s headquarters Grant immediately acknowledged that the DOC had messed up, first, by not doing a better job of communicating what their plans for the 57-year-old facility were to the various constituents of the forest, including the Friends of Myles Standish State Forest who were the hosts of Wednesday night’s meeting.

Until this spring the DOC’s facility had housed criminals nearing the end of their prison terms – always excluding sex offenders and arsonists.
