A state inmate has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Chicago, alleging he was tortured by detectives into giving a false confession. Attorneys for Darrell Cannon filed the lawsuit yesterday. Cannon -- who was convicted of the 1983 murder of Darren Ross -- has said he falsely confessed after detectives working for former Lieutenant Jon Burge (BURJ) tortured him. Cannon was granted a new trial but prosecutors agreed to a deal where Cannon pleaded guilty and dropped his torture claim in exchange for his release. But the Illinois Prisoner Review Board declined to release him from prison. The board also is named in the lawsuit filed by Cannon. A Chicago Law Department spokeswoman declined to comment. |
