An Illinois prison inmate who broke through a wall and beat up another inmate will remain in prison until he is in his 70s. On Wednesday, Robert Boyd, 29, formerly of Pontiac Correctional Center, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the attempted murder of fellow inmate Allen Robinson, 29, in August 2003. Livingston County Circuit County Judge Harold Frobish, who found Boyd guilty in February, said the sentence was harsh, but Boyd had a "miserable" record of behavior. State law requires at least 85 percent of the sentence, or 38 years, be served. Boyd, who is now at Tamms Correctional Center in southern Illinois, originally was imprisoned for a 1994 car theft. He has faced several other charges since becoming incarcerated. He was due for parole in 2015. Boyd was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated battery. The sentence, however, is for a single count of attempted murder. Boyd, who plans to appeal, said he was off medication at the time of the incident and did not plan to seriously injure Robinson. Boyd and inmate Marty Blackmon, 24, broke through two cell walls to get to Robinson. Boyd used metal parts from a light fixture take apart the walls and beat Robinson. Robinson was hospitalized for five days and was permanently disfigured. Blackmon is facing similar charges, although no trial date has been set. He is serving a 44-year sentence for a Cook County murder. |
