Arkansas corrections board approves parole, probation plan

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Board of Corrections has approved a new plan on where to send some parole and probation violators under a law passed this year.

The proposal was pushed through Monday by board chairman Benny Magness, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/2tiBvFw ). He said it was developed with input from the Arkansas Community Correction and the Department of Corrections.

The Legislature passed a law this year that aims to divert certain offenders from prison in an attempt to reduce overcrowding. Offenders who violate probation or parole by failing a drug test or committing certain misdemeanor offenses will be sent to Community Correction Facilities for 45 to 180 days for supervision, however, the Board of Corrections has the final say on where violators will go.
