| Inmate aids prison staffer after another inmate's attack |

NEWTON, Iowa — Union representatives are speaking out after an alleged assault of a staff member by an inmate at the Newton Correctional Facility. The Iowa Department of Corrections said in a news release that an inmate, John Watson, assaulted a staff member around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Another offender arrived at the scene to help the staff member and was followed by corrections staff who were nearby. Health services examined the victim at the prison. The staff member was then taken to the hospital and was later released. Watson is serving time for robbery and burglary from Pottawattamie County since February 2014. Read More. |
