| Pennsylvania legislators mull contractor fee to help children of inmates |

Pennsylvania lawmakers are weighing a measure to establish a first-of-its-kind public charitable trust to provide support services for children with incarcerated parents. The proposal, introduced in the state Senate with bipartisan support, calls for the establishment of the First Chance Trust Fund through charitable donations and a 1 percent surcharge on vendors with contracts in excess of $5 million with the Department of Corrections. Corrections Secretary John Wetzel, who has advocated for increased attention to children with parents in prison, said it could benefit more than 81,000 children. Read More. |
