RACINE — Up to 145 state inmates could be housed at the Racine County Jail under a contract between the county and state Department of Corrections. The agreement could generate as much as $2.7 million in new revenue for the Sheriff’s Office if all 145 beds are rented, according to a resolution the County Board unanimously approved last week. The board also approved creating five correctional officer positions, purchasing equipment such as body cameras, Tasers and radios and transferring $258,402 within the jail’s budget. “We are partnering with the state Department of Corrections to help alleviate overcrowding in some of their institutions,” Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said. “This partnership is beneficial to the Department of Corrections, their inmates and the county.” Read More. |
