New law will protect corrections officers

SALEM, Oregon – The Oregon Legislature has passed a bill sponsored by Sen. Bill Hansell (R-Athena) designed to protect prison guards. He said the measure came as the result of constituents who explained the tortuous treatment they face when they come in contact with bodily fluids from inmates.

“Jeff Kaufman and Brian Branstetter, friends that are corrections officers, said, ‘We get exposed to body fluids when there are altercations and there might be blood exchanged or you get spit on.” Hansell said.

Because of HIPAA privacy requirements, the Department of Corrections employees must undergo a cocktail to treat them possible exposure to diseases without knowing whether they are necessary. Hansell said the medication they must take makes them ill.
