| Budget constraints will reduce inmates at drug treatment, job training facility |

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama Department of Corrections has a new two-year, $18.7 million contract with a private company to provide substance abuse treatment and job training to several hundred state inmates. But budget issues mean the DOC plans to spend less than half the contract amount for inmates at the Alabama Therapeutic and Education Facility in Columbiana, spokesman Bob Horton said Wednesday. “Although the GEO Reentry contract is for $18.7 million for an enrollment of 750 inmates every six months, the Alabama Department of Corrections is limited by budget constraints to earmarking only $3.8 million annually for a 325 inmate six-month enrollment,” Horton said. “Instead of expending $18.7 million on the two-year contract, the cost is $7.6 million.” Read More. |
