The American Correctional Association (ACA), the Institute for Criminal Justice Healthcare's Health Through Walls program, the Broward County Sheriff's Office (Fla.) and the Florida Department of Corrections today announced the donation of correctional equipment and supplies to the Haitian Prison Authority. The donated items will be prepared for shipment April 11-15 at the Joseph V. Conte Jail of the Broward Sheriff's Office. "Haiti is not only our neighbor, but our law enforcement partner," said Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne. "I know how much these donations will mean to the Prison Authority, and I'm proud the Broward Sheriff's Office can help." "Our officers understand the danger of being without the supplies they need," said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary James V. Crosby, Jr. "The profession of corrections creates a brotherhood and sisterhood and that is why we always try to respond when we are called upon." The Haitian Prison Authority operates 15 facilities throughout the country with a population of nearly 2,200 inmates. Items donated include computer equipment, medical supplies, sanitation products, an x-ray machine, and equipment for the prison infirmary. The Broward County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Corrections collected the donated items, which are scheduled to depart the United States for Haiti on April 18. The donations will be presented to Haitian prison officials on May 25. This is the second shipment of correctional supplies coordinated jointly by ACA and the Institute for Criminal Justice Healthcare's Health Through Walls program. |
