HUNTINGTON - The State Personnel Board has approved a pay increase for correctional officers in the state's jails, prisons and juvenile facilities, a move state officials hope will fill vacancies and deter high turnover rates. All West Virginia correctional officers will be given a pay increase of $2,080 annually as of Sept. 2, which is an increase of $1 an hour. For an entry-level correctional officer, the annual pay will be increased from $22,584 to $24,664, an increase of about 9 percent. The revenue to cover the pay increases was made possible by hundreds of unfilled vacancies in the correctional system. Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Secretary Jeff Sandy announced the decision after a State Personnel Board meeting Thursday and hopes it will address high turnover issues among employees in the state's prison, regional jail and juvenile facilities. "A lot of work went into this action," Sandy said. "Gov. (Jim) Justice supported this. He stated that we had to do something for these dedicated employees. Many correctional officers spoke to me personally about this, and I knew we had to act." Read More. |
