Inmates make own alcohol; take over cell block

Prison officials are investigating how eight inmates at a Massachusetts maximum security prison -- apparently drunk on alcohol they brewed themselves -- managed to take over their cell block.
The state Department of Correction says it happened Monday night, when the inmates at MCI Cedar Junction refused to return to their cells. Correction officers sealed off the cell block, isolating the inmates on the first floor of a triple-tier block.
Four hours later, armed officers quickly overpowered the inmates, ending the disruption.
There were no injuries and only minor property damage reported.
Steve Kenneway, president of the correction officers union, says it's not uncommon for inmates to brew their own alcohol. He says the bigger problem is understaffing.
But Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin says there was sufficient staff on duty to isolate and contain the incident.
