An inmate was taken to the hospital after an altercation at the Wyoming State Penitentiary on Wednesday. Several other prisoners were injured during the fracas, and a lockdown was put into effect immediately.
The rumble began about 12:30 p.m. in the C Unit, which is a general prison population area in which inmates are under "close custody," the second-highest level of supervision.
No staffers were injured but some minor injuries occurred to several inmates, Deputy Warden Bill Hettgar said. One inmate was taken to the local hospital as a precaution, treated and returned to the institution.
"Due to good training and security at the institution, officers were able to prevent an escalation of this event and quickly locked down all inmates while we proceed with an investigation," Hettgar said in a release.
The Carbon County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Wyoming Department of Corrections Investigations Unit.
The lockdown will be in effect until administrators feel it can safely be lifted, Hettgar said. No other details were immediately available.
