Two inmates were injured in a riot Wednesday night at a medium-security firefighting camp run by the Riverside County Fire Department and the California Department of Corrections near Oak Glen, officials said. Black and Hispanic inmates numbering about 60 of the camp's 160 inmates began fighting about 6:55 p.m., corrections Lt. Ward Jones said Wednesday by phone. "It was definitely racially motivated," Jones said. "They usually get along." Inmates used fists, broom handles and "a couple chairs here and there," he said. One inmate suffered a bleeding head wound and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center in fair condition, Jones said. The other, who had suffered a bump on the head that was not considered life-threatening, was taken to Redlands Community Hospital, Jones said. Security officials used pepper spray to break up the melee, and they were soon joined by about 50 to 60 off-duty employees, Riverside County sheriff's deputies from the Cabazon and Moreno Valley stations, and California Highway Patrol officers, Jones said. It took officials about 30 minutes to regain control, he said. The inmates involved in the brawl were to be transported late Wednesday night to the California Institution for Men in Chino for a higher level of custody, Jones said. |
