Georgia prisoner killed after attempted escape

A Georgia inmate was shot to death Thursday outside an Augusta hospital after he overpowered a prison officer, took his gun and tried to escape.
The incident was eerily similar to the Fulton County Courthouse shooting in March, when authorities say rape defendant Brian Nichols beat a sheriff's deputy, got her gun and killed three people during his escape. But Thursday's event ended differently: Darius O'Neal Magby was gunned down by Medical College of Georgia police before he could flee the property. No bystanders were injured.
Magby was taken to the college's hospital Thursday morning for treatment of an undisclosed medical problem, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb. MCG hospital provides health services for state prisoners.
Magby was serving a life sentence at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville for felonies in Fulton, Gwinnett and Clayton counties dating to 1991, including armed robbery, cocaine trafficking, burglary and false imprisonment.
At 10:45 a.m., Magby apparently overpowered the corrections officer who had been escorting him, Lipscomb said. A hospital employee phoned MCG police to report the escape. "After repeated attempts to get the inmate to surrender," officers shot him as he left the building, according to a statement released by the hospital. He died in the emergency room.
A few bystanders suffered scratches as they attempted to avoid the fleeing inmate, MCG said.
Hospital spokeswoman Danielle Wong Moores said Thursday's events unfolded "very quickly," though officials have not established a precise timetable.
Lipscomb did not release the name of the officer. He was "shaken up" but suffered no major injuries, she said.
