A masked gunman shot at a van carrying students who participate in a Pittsburgh court-ordered after-school program, injuring two people, officials said. Witnesses said the gunman, who was dressed in black and wore a blue bandanna over his face, fired two shots at the van when it stopped to pick up a teenager Thursday afternoon on Pittsburgh's North Side. The gunman then ran away. The vehicle carried teens to The Academy, a program for juvenile offenders. The driver, James Willis, 34, who also worked as a counselor at The Academy, sped away when the shots were fired, said Joseph Daugerdas, executive director of the program. Willis suffered facial cuts from flying glass after a bullet shattered the driver's side window. He was treated at Allegheny General Hospital, officials said. Chaiz Brown, 16, hurt his back when he dived to get out of the way of the bullets, said his mother, Alberta Shaw. "This is crazy. My son was going to The Academy to get his life together. This is very scary," Shaw said. It's possible that one of the van's occupants was the target of the shooting, police said. This is the third time this year that a van from The Academy was the target of gunfire, Daugerdas said. "There's just so many guns and violence occurring in the neighborhoods we have to transport these students from," Daugerdas said. "As long as this neighborhood's illogical hatred exits between kids, it's risky." |
