Correctional costs driving jail budget higher

The cost of operating the Ward County Jail is expected to go up next year as higher inmate medical bills and additional staff to operate an expanded facility will exceed savings from the elimination of full-time state monitoring.

Ward County commissioners heard from several county department heads Monday as they began reviewing requests for the 2018 preliminary budget. Meetings with department heads and agencies continue this morning.

The Ward County Sheriff’s Office is proposing a 6 percent spending increase in its law enforcement functions along with a 15 percent increase in jail operations. Spending on juvenile detention is proposed to remain largely unchanged.

“The majority of it is because of additional employees,” Sheriff Bob Barnard said of the jail increase.
