A convicted murderer serving a life sentence for killing a Boca Raton, Fla., teenager has been stabbed in the chest with a homemade knife behind bars.
Thomas Meek, 52, was airlifted last Monday from the Martin Correctional Institution north of Indiantown to a St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach. He was in stable condition last week.
"Once his condition stabilizes a little bit more, they'll bring him back to the prison," Corrections Department spokesman Sterling Ivey said.
Prison officials have questioned another inmate but have not made any arrests, he said.
Meek was convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of Sonya Sanj, 14. Her skeletal remains were found in woods behind a mall in 1981 after Meek led deputies to the spot the year after she disappeared. His conviction and sentence have been upheld twice on appeal.
Meek was acquitted of loan-sharking in prison in 1991. He was transferred to Martin in March 2004 and had a history of disciplinary reports for a variety of infractions, records show.
