| Wisconsin Department of Corrections makes payroll error, tells 12 workers to repay $39,000 |

MADISON - The Wisconsin Department of Corrections this summer determined it had overpaid a dozen employees and asked them to pay back more than $39,000 combined. Seven of the 12 employees resigned, including one who was told she owed nearly $15,000 for pay going back 2½ years. The five who remained are making arrangements to return what state officials consider overpayments, according to the department. But an employment lawyer questioned the ability of the state to force the workers to pay back the money since they had been paid what they were told they would be paid. “It’s blunder upon blunder it seems with the Department of Corrections,” said Jeff Hynes, president of the Wisconsin Employment Lawyers Association.
