One of two teenage escapees from a state Juvenile Detention Center surrendered Wednesday after a day on the run. Lacy Chapman, 16, was picked up at his family's home after he telephoned state Juvenile Justice Custody Officer Tom Manley, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Chapman and Barry Paul, 16, who remains at large, fled early Tuesday from the state facility on South Bumby Avenue after instigating a brawl to cover their escape, reports show.
The fight broke out at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when a 6-foot, 6-inch teenager and two others jumped a fourth detainee, according to sheriff's reports.
Chapman and Paul jumped the fence unnoticed until after the "code blue" alarm that called out all available guards to break up the fight. A head count determined two teens' absence, reports show.
Anyone with information on Paul is asked to call Crimeline at 407-423-8477.
The four teens involved in the fight were arrested on charges of fighting. One of the four told authorities that the escapees told them when to start the brawl.
Three youths subsequently were charged with attempted escape when they tried to kick out the windows of a vehicle carrying them to a detention center, reports show.
