More than 4,000 inmates are still waiting to return to Texas prisons flooded by Hurricane Harvey, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. As heavy rains pelted southeast Texas last month, nearly 6,000 convicts were evacuated from five prisons near the bulging Brazos River. The first round of evacuations cleared out the Stringfellow, Terrell and Ramsey units near Rosharon on Aug. 26, and two days later authorities emptied the Jester 3 and Vance prisons in Richmond. "Our status has improved significantly," TDCJ executive director Bryan Collier said last week when announcing the return of some 1,400 inmates to the Richmond-area units. Read More. |
