Jury clears ex-prison officers

Jurors acquitted two former officers at the Indiana Women's Prison accused of coercing sexual favors from female inmates.
Last week, a Marion Superior Court jury found Demietrus Spencer, 32, and William Sanders, 42, not guilty of sexual misconduct.
According to court records, Spencer, Sanders and a third officer had sex with at least three inmates from June 2001 to May 2002 at the facility at 401 N. Randolph St.
Defense attorneys said it is clear that jurors did not believe the testimony from the prisoners who claimed to be victims.
“The offender wasn't telling the truth,” said Bryan Cook, Spencer's attorney. “This never happened and she had a bunch of motives to make a false claim.”
Prosecutors had no physical evidence backing up the prisoners' claims. Deputy Prosecutor Shari Blessing believes the women were telling the truth, but said it was difficult for jurors to look beyond their crimes.
“I think it was hard to get over that credibility issue,” Blessing said.
Co-defendant Clifford Barlow, 35, pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and an unrelated drunken driving charge. He was sentenced to 18-months probation.
The three officers were fired in August 2002.
