Two correctional officers were stabbed by an inmate at California Correctional Institution the morning of April 15. The two officers were assaulted during the release of general-population, maximum-security inmates to the yard. The response of other staff members quelled the attack immediately. “My main concern is for the safety of staff,” said Warden W.J. Sullivan. “This incident is a good example of the kind of violence the inmate population is capable of. The staff involved did an outstanding job handling the incident and responding officers were responsible for preventing even more serious injuries.” The injured officers were sent to a hospital where they were treated for stab wounds and released. One received two significant lacerations to the forehead and the other received a superficial laceration to the biceps. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire staff go out to the injured officers and their families,” said Sullivan. Unit IVB where the attack occurred has been placed on lockdown to facilitate the investigation and visiting has been cancelled until further notice. The inmate suspect, 44, was received by the California Department of Corrections on Dec. 24, 1990 and is serving a 31-year sentence for attempted first-degree murder. He has three prior prison commitments dating back to 1981. |
