U.S. Marshals assisted in the capture of the inmate who allegedly walked out of Northeast Georgia Medical Center following emergency surgery earlier this week. On Wednesday evening, Steven Smith, 27, was tracked down to a campsite north of Helen a little more than a day after he fled the hospital amidst the chaos of Tuesday's tropical storm. "The inmate is now in custody," said Sheriff Stacy Jarrard. Smith was initially transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center late last week where he was diagnosed with appendicitis. Read More. |
