| Brownback touts prison mentoring program |

On the heels of prison riots that have roiled the Kansas Department of Corrections this summer, Gov. Sam Brownback traveled to Washington this week to tout the state’s prison mentoring program in a meeting with top officials in President Donald Trump’s White House. Brownback, who has also championed mentoring for welfare recipients, went to Washington to talk about his Mentoring4Success program, his interim spokesman, Rachel Whitten said in an email. The program, launched in 2011, is aimed at reducing recidivism and has so far matched 2,286 inmates with mentors to help them reenter the community after incarceration. Whitten said Brownback met with Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, American Enterprise Institute president Arthur Brooks, Housing and Urban Development Sec. Ben Carson and Sen. John Cornyn, “among others,” on Thursday. “Governor Brownback is a well-respected advocate for prison mentorship, and the Mentoring4Success program he championed has been resoundingly successful—its participants come back to prison at half the rate of other inmates.” Whitten said.
