A Fulton County (Ga.) sheriff's deputy was assaulted last week inside a Fulton County courtroom by a man awaiting a hearing, the department said last Wednesday. Deputy M. Mosley was trying to calm down the man after he lashed out at a courtroom employee, but the man would not comply, the Sheriff's Office said. When the deputy walked behind the man to physically subdue him, the man swung at her, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Nikita Adams-Hightower. Mosley, 40, ducked to avoid being hit, then was able to push the man on to a courtroom wall, Adams-Hightower said. The 18-year department veteran didn't have an opportunity to radio for help but a witness to the scuffle ran out of the courtroom and alerted other deputies, officials said. "She did a great job," said Adams-Hightower, pointing out that the man, at 6 feet, 2 inch, stood a foot taller than the deputy. "She did exactly what she was trained to do." Police say Russell Hall, was in courtroom G33, awaiting a pre-trial release hearing on a burglary charge. Hall had been released on bond on his own recognizance, and the appearance before the judge was to determine whether he was complying with the conditions of his release. The court had not gone into session when Hall became belligerent toward a courtroom employee, prompting Mosley to intervene, officials said. Department policy requires that two deputies be present whenever an inmate makes a court appearance. But because Hall was out on bond, the presence of Mosley by herself was not out of the ordinary, Adams-Hightower said. "At any given time they can become belligerent. That comes with the risk of the job," she said. Hall now faces additional charges of assaulting an officer, she said. |
