Program has Pa. inmates training dogs until ready for adoption

A program at a state correctional facility in Luzerne County has inmates training dogs until they can be placed into their forever homes.

The Citizens' Voice reports that State Correctional Institute at Retreat received three dogs on Monday from a chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The program's goal is to train the dogs, which are all part pit bull, to make them more adoptable. The report indicates that each dog is assigned to an inmate handler chosen after a lengthy selection and training process.
