A corrections officer was released unharmed after a 3-hour standoff overnight at the Oregon State Penitentiary.
It started about 10 p.m. Monday when inmate Leighton Wayne Bates, armed with a homemade knife, allegedly took Cpl. Rebecca McLauchlin hostage.
McLauchlin was able to radio for help, and officials isolated the inmate and the hostage and locked down the facility. Negotiators secured the McLauchlin's release about 1 a.m.
"The corporal's courage and experience contributed to the successful resolution of this critical incident," Corrections Director Max Williams said in a news release. "Her fortitude combined with the measured, appropriate response of the staff at the penitentiary proved to be a winning combination in a situation that could have turned out differently."
McLauchlin, a 10-year veteran, was taken to Salem Hospital for evaluation and later released.
Bates was moved to isolation during an investigation of the incident. Officials say no other inmates were directly involved.
Bates, 44, is serving 51 years for numerous crimes, including robbery, rape, kidnapping, escape and sodomy.
