The man charged with murdering a Providence police detective attacked three corrections officers on Tuesday, leaving one hospitalized, a corrections spokeswoman said. According to spokeswoman Joy Fox, the most seriously injured officer suffered a fractured jaw, broken eye socket and cracked vertebra. Esteban Carpio, 26, will face additional charges for the incident, Fox said. Carpio has been held at the Adult Correctional Institutions since April 17. Police say while being questioned at police headquarters in connection with an April 16 stabbing, Carpio grabbed Det. Sgt. James Allen's gun and shot him twice before shooting out a third-story window and jumping from it. He was captured about an hour later. According to Fox, on Tuesday at about 6:45 p.m., Carpio began "acting up" in his cell. She would not elaborate on his specific behavior. A team of four officers and a lieutenant went in to stop him and he fought with them, she said. One of the two other officers receiving medical treatment suffered a thumb injury. Carpio spat at the other, Fox said. The officer who suffered the jaw, eye socket and spine injuries was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital. |
