| La. set to release 1,400 prisoners Wednesday |

A total of about 1,400 people will get out of jail early on Wednesday because of a change in Louisiana law. The judicial reform package signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards on June 15 aims to save the state money, reduce the prison population and cut crime, all at the same time. Under the new laws, prisoners who are non-violent and non-sex offenders and meet the requirements can earn more time off of their sentences for good behavior. The change is expected to drop the prison population by 10 percent, reduce the number of people on probation and parole by 12 percent and save taxpayers $264 million over the next 10 years. Seventy percent of the savings are then reinvested into programs like job training, mental health and substance abuse and education that will be offered in and out of jails. Speaker Pro Tem, Rep Walt Leger (D- New Orleans) said Louisiana currently spends about $700 million a year incarcerating inmates. Leger is one of the authors of the 10-bill package modeled after initiatives that he said have proved successful in other Southern states, such as Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.
