An inmate who fatally stabbed his grandmother more than 30 times to get cash for crack cocaine was executed early this morning in Missouri's new death chamber. Donald Jones, 38, was put to death at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center near this eastern Missouri town, despite relatives' requests that Gov. Matt Blunt spare his life. His relatives argued that the 68-year-old victim would not have sought vengeance against her grandson. Blunt declined to intervene Tuesday, for the second time in a little more than a month refusing to grant clemency to a condemned inmate despite a recommendation to do so by the state parole board. Jones "murdered his grandmother in a violent way, and I think the only appropriate punishment is the death penalty," the Republican governor said, calling the crime "terrible." Jones swallowed while strapped to the gurney, licked his lips and mouthed words to his family and toward the ceiling before losing conciousness as the first of three chemicals was injected. Jones coughed four times and was pronounced dead at 12:07 a.m. There were no witnesses in the area designated for the victim. Those witnesses were seated with Jones' family and friends. The U.S. Supreme Court also refused Tuesday to step in on behalf of Jones. |
