| Torrington man accused of murder found competent to participate in own defense |

TORRINGTON — Daniel Gervais was ruled competent to stand trial Tuesday in Superior Court in Torrington, paving the way for a probable cause hearing. Gervais, 70, was arrested May 3 by Torrington police and charged with murder, after his wife, Phyllis Gervais, was found dead in the couple’s home on Cider Mill Crossing on April 22. He was found incompetent to participate in his own defense Sept. 12, when a clinical team with the Office of Forensic Evaluations, a subgroup of the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, concluded Gervais “displayed significant deficits that interfered with his ability to learn, retain, or apply information that was presented to him” during an evaluation. He was sent to the Whiting Forensic Division of the Connecticut Valley Hospital, according to a report entered as an exhibit in the case Tuesday. Read More. |
